Adult / Teen Class Focus

We offer classes for Adult and Teens targeted at beginners (or those who might have taken a martial art years ago), and focus on both the physical and mental.

Physically, we look to help:

  • Improve Reflexes and Coordination which increases your performance in all physical activities
  • Increase Strength and Stamina, boosting energy so you feel great all day
  • Increase Flexibility for better overall fitness
  • Teach you practical Self Defense

Mentally we look to help:

  • Stress Reduction & Increased Levels of Relaxation for a longer, healthier life
  • Bring Peace of Mind that comes from knowing that you are able to Protect Yourself & Your Family
  • Increase Self Confidence & Self Discipline to develop a positive attitude toward life.

Classes are held Tuesday Evenings from 7:15 to 8:15

Typical Class Format / Content

  • Warm-up – Each class starts with a number of warm-up and stretching exercises to prepare you to participate safely in the class.

  • Karate Basics – Kenpo karate, as are all martial art, is based on a set of basic movements, blocks and strikes that can be compared to letters of the alphabet. The knowledge and combination of this alphabet of movements is what helps students progress in the art. These basic movements are divided into four main areas:

• Stances and Foot Movements

• Blocking

• Upper body strikes  - Punches, other Hand Strikes, Elbows, ...

• Lower Body Strikes - Kicks, Knees, ...

  • Forms (Katas) - these are a combination of basic movements in an order that allows easy learning. They begin as a few simple movements strung together (the basics above), and increase in complexity as students advance. They help with memory and coordination, as well as providing an imaginary encounter with different opponents.

  • Self Defense Techniques and Principles – The core of American Kenpo, the techniques consist of defined defensive movements and principles aimed at different situations. Over time, you will make  / tailor your own techniques and react instinctively in any given situation.

  • Karate History – this is a portion of the class, typically near the end, where we briefly review what we have learned, and discuss Martial Arts history and facts.
